چکیده

We investigated the kinematics of the Narrow Line Region of NGC 1068. In order to study the kinematics and to determine whether the unusual broad line width can be attributed to motion of NLR clouds in a deep gravitational potential or to expanding shocks, we carried out spatially resolved echelle spectroscopy. High spectral resolution enables the identification of individual clouds in long slit spectra even if their angular separation is much smaller than the seeing limited resolution of ground-based instruments. Most of the [OIII] line emission can be attributed to 12 clouds with an average angular separation of about 0. 3. These clouds differ in peak velocity by up to 2000 km s −1 , spanning the whole range of the integrated line profile with FWHM = 1150 km s −1. The clouds do not delineate a simple rotational velocity field. We find evidence for shocks due to the interaction of the radio jet with the ambient NLR gas. The clouds which are attributed to shocks have a width of 350 km s −1 to 600 km s −1 while clouds with FWHM 200 km s −1 seem to follow a circular velocity field. Therefore, the line width of individual clouds are an essential contribution to the integrated line width of the NLR of NGC 1068 which is not due only to gravitational forces but shocks playing an important role.

Resolved Spectroscopy of the Narrow-Line Region in NGC 1068: Kinematics of the Ionized Gas.

We have determined the radial velocities of the [O iii]-emitting gas in the inner narrow-line region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, along a slit at position angle 202 degrees, from STIS observations at a spatial resolution of 0&farcs;1 and a spectral resolving power of lambda&solm0;Deltalambda approximately 1000. We use these data to investigate the kinematics of the narrow-line region withi...

The physical conditions in the inner narrow line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, are examined using ultraviolet and optical spectra and photoionization models. The spectra are Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive data obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS). We selected spectra of four regions, taken through the 0.3 FOS aperture, covering the full FOS 1200 Å to 6800 Å ...

Kinematics of Molecular Gas in the Nucleus of NGC 1068 , from H 2 line emission observed with VLT ⋆

We present results about the distribution and kinematics of the molecular environment of the AGN in NGC 1068, over a 1.5 ′′ × 3.5 ′′ region around the central engine in NGC 1068, derived from H 2 line emission detected with ISAAC at VLT/ANTU on ESO/Paranal. The H 2 emitting molecular gas is found to be distributed along the East-West direction and with two main peak emission (knots) located at ...

Kinematic and Excitation Structure of the NGC 1068 Narrow-Line Region

We investigated the kinematic and excitation structure of the NGC 1068 narrow-line region (NLR). We obtained profiles of several emission lines, [O III]λ5007, Hβ, [O I]λ6300 and [FeVII]λ6087 at high-velocity resolution (R ∼ 7500 11000), and confirmed that they showed different profiles. These profiles are useful for understanding the NLR structure, as they cover a wide ionization potential rang...

Modelling the Extended Narrow Line Region in NGC 1068

We present photoionization models of the high excitation gas in the Extended Narrow Line Region (ENLR) of NGC 1068. The ENLR line fluxes have been calculated allowing for attenuation of the central-source ionizing continuum as a function of distance from the centre. Diffuse continuum emission from low density ENLR gas is included as an important secondary source of ionization. The observed high...
